Remanufactured Ford Fusion Transmissions

Ford Fusion Transmission Problems & Solutions

The Ford Crown Victoria was a luxurious fullsize sedan, designed to attract the sort of buyer that actually experienced the joy and relief of V-Day. Their kids have become known as 'Baby Boomers', and they were largely responsible for the success of the midsize Ford Taurus back in the 80's & 90's. By the mid-2000's, members of the Greatest Generation weren't buying cars like they once did. But their kids were now buying larger, more comfortable cars as they eased their way toward retirement. Facing a huge shift in their customer base, the product planners in Dearborn decided to put the familiar Taurus name on their new fullsize Ford 500, and turn their next midsize sedan into a whole new model called the Ford Fusion, which was equipped with both the AWF21 transmission and later models with the 6F35 transmission.

This all-new 'bread & butter' sedan got a modern aesthetic to attract the next generation of Ford buyers. While the drivetrains were specifically engineered to be more fuel efficient than ever before. Buyers responded by making the Fusion one of the best-selling cars in its class. However, it doesn't matter how popular this Camry competitor is in the showroom, Ford Fusion transmission problems do happen. So let's figure out how you can solve them.

Common Problems with the Ford Fusion AWF21 / FNR5 Transmission

1) AWF21 / FNR5 Valve Body Failure

Due to numerous design flaws, many common Ford Fusion transmission problems can be traced back to either a failed valve body, or one of the AWF21 / FNR5 solenoids that live in the valve body. These FNR5 / AWF21 transmission problems can include slipping, erratic shifting, unusually hard shifts, delayed shifts, and/or the total loss of forward/reverse gears. To fix these problems, every remanufactured AWF21 transmission / remanufactured FNR5 transmission from Street Smart Transmission gets a remanufactured valve body with a heavy duty recalibration kit. Once all of the bores have been machined back to spec, redesigned valve body accumulators, servos, and PR system components are installed. Remanufactured solenoids are bench tested prior to installation, and the completed valve body is then dyno tested to ensure proper functionality.

2) Torque Convertor Failure

Another of the more common Ford Fusion problems, is a failed torque convertor. Excess heat can cause the OD clutch and bearings to fail prematurely. This can lead to a number of AWF21 problems / FNR5 problems, including slipping, stalling, shuddering, delayed gear engagement, strange noises and overheating. To address this issue, every SST remanufactured Ford Fusion transmission comes with a completely remanufactured torque convertor, which has more durable bushings to extend its service life. The reman torque convertor is also tested for leaks, concentricity and balance prior to shipment.

3) Failed Valve Body Accumulators

One of the most common Ford Focus 4F27E transmission problems is unusually hard shifts. This condition is typically caused by a broken transmission accumulator, which are basically spring-loaded dampers that absorb the extra fluid pressure that instantly builds up when one of the shift solenoids actuates a shift. If the spring goes bad, that instant rush of fluid pressure will cause an unpleasant driving experience, along with internal damage if the actuators aren't changed.

Common Problems with the Ford Fusion 6F35 Transmission

This electronically controlled 6-speed automatic can suffer from a variety of issues, which mostly stem from poorly designed components. Some of these 6F35 transmission problems include irregular shifting behavior, slipping between gears, delayed shifts, hard shifts, and the complete failure to engage forward and/or reverse gears. In order to correct all of these Ford Fusion 6F35 transmission problems, Street Smart Transmission performs the following upgrades to each reman 6F35:

Transmission Control Module (TCM) gets updated to the latest calibrations & tested to ensure proper operation
Remanufactured valve body receives a full recalibration kit
Remanufactured solenoids are bench tested prior to installation
More durable bushings are used throughout
Every bushing and machined surface gets polished to a mirror-like finish of 15 RA or less
A new torque converter support bearing is installed
Remanufactured pump gets polished mating surfaces
Custom-spec clutch clearances are used
A remanufactured & bench tested torque convertor gets shipped with each reman Ford Fusion transmission

How to Solve Ford Fusion Transmission Problems

Option #1: Buy a Used Ford Fusion AWF21 / Used Ford Fusion FNR5 / Used Ford Fusion 6F35 Transmission

Since most of the above Ford Fusion transmission problems started at the factory, getting a
used AWF21 / used FNR5 / used 6F35 transmission from your friendly neighborhood junkyard isn't likely to do much more than buy you some time. Because those same problems are virtually guaranteed to happen again. Plus the 30-90 day replacement warranty on that used Ford Fusion transmission, probably won't cover labor charges if the first used Ford transmission fails.

Option #2: Buy a Rebuilt Ford Fusion AWF21 / Rebuilt Ford Fusion FNR5 / Rebuilt Ford Fusion 6F35 Transmission

Naturally, getting a rebuilt Ford Fusion transmission might seem like a better option at first. But if that rebuilt AWF21 / rebuilt FNR5 / rebuilt 6F35 transmission was built using an OE-spec transmission master rebuild kit, all those Ford Fusion transmission problems are just going to come right back. And the warranty you get on that rebuilt Ford Fusion transmission, may only be honored by a small number of region-specific shops. Which will do you no good if transmission trouble strikes while you're out of town.

Option #3: Buy a Remanufactured Ford Fusion AWF21 / Remanufactured Ford Fusion FNR5 / Remanufactured Ford Fusion 6F35 Transmission

If you want to solve all of your Ford Fusion transmission problems once and for all, then getting a remanufactured AWF21 / remanufactured FNR5 / remanufactured 6F35 transmission from Street Smart Transmission is your best option.
